I’ve picked a few of my favourite photos of this year. It makes me realise – we have seen a lot.

January

Street art to the max. It was in the Canterbury Museum, it was on the streets. Brilliant stuff.

One of my favourite things to take photos of this year has been cranes and the sky. The variation comes from the background and the sky, the cranes are always cranes, though sometimes they dip their heads in conversation to one another.

And another thing we enjoy are markets. This is one of Anissa Victoria’s Vintage Market at the Commons, formerly the Pallet Pavilion, formerly the Crowne Plaza, formerly the Park Royal …

Suddenly strange: 2014 in pictures: June

Dad and the kid at the Botanic Gardens.

The Houses for Swamp Dwellers by Julia Morison light up a treat.

And another day at the Botanics, trying to feed the ducks. But the eels kept them away.

This was a beautiful bit of street art, but lots demolished now.

A bit in love with the new Stranges building on the corner of High Street. Angles, colour, light, and even a bit of stained glass – it is like the prow of some strange spaceship.

I remember The Treehouse and karaoke.

Bizarro Christchurch: 2014 in pictures: May

Kia ora and welcome to a selection of photos from Christchurch in May. Sunrises and sunsets certainly laid out the pretty. And by heck if there wasn’t that feel of Roman (and Egyptian) ruins.

Again Chris Heaphy’s Whare in Cathedral Square held my heart. One of my favourite art works in Christchurch without a doubt.

And the Burster Flipper is an enjoyable show.

Dad met Swedish writer Camilla Lackberg.

Demolition, as ever. The Frontrunner went down, goodbye to the silver mannequins who posed up a storm.

The Majestic Theatre inches ever lower. An invisible audience sits and watches.

And meanwhile a butterfly in the Agropolis nearby.

Southwark Street – Bizarro world. I was walking to work on Friday 23 May and spotted the tip of a painted sky down Southwark Street. So glad of my curiosity – I discovered a bizarro world of reflection, repetition, wit and wonder. It is beside Warren and Mahoney. Am trying to track down any information on this rather fabulous and surprising thing. Bravo.

When I do these posts, they always give me a jog. I think “Oh yes, that’s what was happening”. And I see the things that catch my eye – family and friends, art taking shape, signs, views. In April I watched the Ballerina grow and the demise of the CCC and Victoria Apartments. They come, they go.
